 GLOSSARY:

1)Server is a computer program that has an associated client program. This might run on the same computer or on another networked computer. MySql is an example of a database server program. Developers write clients that communicate with the server.

2) Hub: is a central connecting point for multiple computers in a network.

3) Wireless modem: is a network device which connects to a wireless network. Modems are frequently associated with telephone systems, but wireless modems are used with computers to connect to the Internet. Connecting a wireless modem to the computer will directly connect to your wireless ISP (Internet Service Provider).

4) Modem: is actually an odd acronym for Modulator-Demodulator. A modem takes a digital signal from your computer and converts to an analog signal so that it can be transferred through a phone line. This conversion is necessary because modems make use of regular phone lines which are analog. Newer technologies don't require this conversion, but more often than not, the term modem is still used.

5) Router:This is a hardware device that routes data (hence the name) from a local area network (LAN) to another network connection. A router acts like a coin sorting machine, allowing only authorized machines to connect to other computer systems. Most routers also keep log files about the local network activity.

6) Switch: is a device that channels incoming data from any of multiple input ports to the specific output port that will take the data toward its intended destination. In the traditional circuit-switched telephone network, one or more switches are used to set up a dedicated though temporary connection or circuit for an exchange between two or more parties.

7) Database: is an organized collection of data for one or more purposes, usually in digital form. The data are typically organized to model relevant aspects of reality (for example, the availability of rooms in hotels), in a way that supports processes requiring this information (for example, finding a hotel with vacancies). The term "database" refers both to the way its users view it, and to the logical and physical materialization of its data, content, in files, computer memory, and computer data storage. This definition is very general, and is independent of the technology used.

8) Mainframe:is an ultra high-performance computer made for high-volume, processor-intensive computing. They are typically used by large businesses and for scientific purposes. You probably won't find a mainframe in any household. In the hierarchy of computers, mainframes are right below supercomputers, the most powerful computers in the world.

9) Rack: is any of several phrases used by portions of the BDSM community to describe themselves and their philosophies. Note: This term is sometimes also seen as risk-accepted consensual kink.

10) Proxy server: is a server that acts as an intermediary between a workstation user and the Internet so that the enterprise can ensure security, administrative control, and caching service. A proxy server is associated with or part of a gateway server that separates the enterprise network from the outside network and a firewall server that protects the enterprise network from outside intrusion.

11) Web server: Web servers are computers that deliver (serves up) Web pages. Every Web server has an IP address and possibly a domain name.

12) Firewall:  is a device or set of devices designed to permit or deny network transmissions based upon a set of rules and is frequently used to protect networks from unauthorized access while permitting legitimate communications to pass.

13) Network cloud: A communications network. The word "cloud" by itself may refer to any local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN). However, append the word "computing," and "cloud computing" refers to services offered on the public Internet or to a private network that uses the same protocols

14) PDA: Short for personal digital assistant, a handheld device that combines computing, telephone/fax, Internet and networking feautures . A typical PDA can function as a cellular phone, fax sender, Web browser and personal organizer.

15) Database server: A computer in a network that is dedicated to database storage and retrieval. It holds the database management system (see DBMS) and the databases. Upon requests from the client machines, it searches the database for selected records and passes back the results.

16) Mail server: is a computer in a network that provides "post office" facilities. It stores incoming mail for distribution to users (message store) and forwards outgoing mail through the appropriate channel (message transfer agent). The term may refer to just the software that performs this service, which can reside on a machine with other applications or to a stand-alone computer dedicated only to the mail function.

17) External storage: Any type of storage device that is connected to and controlled by a computer but is not integrated within it. Generally the devices are peripheral units such as disk drives or tape transports. An external storage device may be shared by more than one computer.

18) Outlet:place on a wall where you can connect electrical equipment to the supply of electricity.

19) Computer: is a device that accepts infotmatio (in the form of digitalized data) and manipulates it for some result based on a program or sequence of instructions on how the data is to be processed.

20) Speakers: are one of the most common output devices used with computer systems. Some speakers are designed to work specifically with computers, while others can be hooked up to any type of sound system. Regardless of their design, the purpose of speakers is to produce audio output that can be heard by the listener.
